Understanding the Brief

What is Hazing?

There are three components commonly associated during a hazing event.

  1. Hazing occurs in a group context.

  2. Hazing is humiliating, degrading, or endangering behavior.

  3. Hazing happens regardless of an individual’s willingness to participate.

The Client’s Goal

W&M’s goal is to empower all in their community to recognize hazing in its various forms, to know what to do if hazing is witnessed or experience directly, and to feel confident in taking action.  The client hopes to empower the greater W&M community through awareness, education, and access to resources.

A Home Without Hazing Training Prevention

A Home Without Hazing training is offered at W&M in order to support on-going hazing prevention efforts.  The University believes that no one should ever be demeaned or exposed to harm in their efforts to be part of campus life.  In-person participation in A Home Without Hazing training is required for all student organizations with new members.  A Home Without Hazing trainings will consist of four separate required trainings (prospective members, new members, active members, and advisors).

Deliverables

William and Mary’s Office of Student Leadership Development requested assistance in designing a custom badge for stickers, social media graphics, and a postcard. These items would be used to advertise the University’s updated training prevention programing.

Design Decisions

My design strategy began in efforts to encompass the University’s belief that no one should ever be demeaned or exposed to harm in their efforts to be part of campus life. To accomplish this, I utilized inspiration from personal college experiences and the experience of William & Mary’s student body.

The Walk Across Campus is a time-honored tradition when incoming and graduating students embark on a walk across campus and through the doors of the Wren building. Incoming students walk through the Wren doors and are greeted by a cheering crowd of upperclass students. Countless, student made, “Welcome Home” signs line the historic path and guide students into the heart of William and Mary’s Campus. The experience is energetic, enthusiastic, and the warmest of welcomes.

On the day of commencement, graduating students embark on the journey across campus one last time. They travel over the Crim Dell Bridge, through the University’s sunken gardens, and back across the threshold through which they entered. The tradition symbolizes the journey each student takes and honors the time students call William and Mary, “Home.”

I chose to incorporate the iconic Crim Dell Bridge within the badge’s design to harken (pun intended, Hark upon the gail!) student’s to their journey at William and Mary and how each student deserves to feel welcome and experience a safe place to call home. I used the symbol of a house as the shape of the badge to reinforce the meaning of home. Additionally, I used photography captured at a recent Opening Convocation, which is when new student first walk through the Wren Building.
